Management of digital projects
I have been working in the digital industry for some time now, mostly as a web developer, and I have been a part of numerous digital projects. From my, limited to be honest, experience the process of creating digital products is not subject to traditional project management techniques. The management of digital projects requires a different approach and it is rarely an one time thing, something that you do for a couple of months and then its over. Most likely, it is an ongoing process.
The management of digital projects is something that must be integrated in the day to day workflow of the organization, in order to be effective and constantly up to date. In a fast changing environment like the internet short term project “sprints” are not likely to work. Instead a more flexible and dynamic approach should be adopted. An approach that consists of multiple iterations and takes into account user feedback.
Paul Boag in his excellent presentation, illustrates these points and describes a new way to manage digital projects. This approach has emerged from actual real world examples through innovative institutions like GOV.UK and the University of Surrey.
